Can Candles Have an Effect on Your Mental Health?

Oct 11th 2022

Turns out that Scientists are confirming what candle lovers have known all along.

andles have been used for centuries for many purposes. One of the lesser-known benefits of candles is their ability to improve mental health. "It is scientifically proven that scented candles can play an essential role in the physiological effects of mood, stress, working capacity, and overall mental health," Chryssa Chalkia, an accredited clinical integrative psychotherapist and cognitive behavioral therapist wrote in a published article.

"The soothing effect that candles have is based on how the brain processes smells. The smell of scented candles stimulates our limbic system, the part of the brain that is home to our memory and emotions. Hormones like serotonin and dopamine can be produced to help regulate mood. Therefore, our emotional state is influenced by the relationship that exists between scents, memories, and emotions."

The connections between candles and mental health are varied, but we’d like to focus on the top three benefits:

Candles Can Help to Improve Mood

One of the main benefits of candles for mental health is their ability to improve mood. Have you ever smelled a candle scent that immediately takes you away to a specific place and time in your life? Due to the way our limbic system works, scent, emotion and memory are intertwined which allows us to reminisce on certain memories. Whether you’re experiencing sadness, grief, or simply having a bd day – lighting a candle that reminds you of a happier time can make you feel better and not focus as much on the little details of what you’re currently going through.

When we light a scented candle for our mental health, we are not only getting the benefits of aromatherapy but also the benefits of self-care. The act of lighting a candle is calming in and of itself and it’s a ritual that can signal to our brain that it’s time to relax.

Candles Can Help to Improve Concentration

Our sense of smell is so powerful that it can shape certain behaviors such as helping to promote concentration, focus and improve productivity. When you’re studying or focusing on a task, having candles in view where you can see their calming glow and watch them burn are perfect as you work to block distractions.

Candles Can Help to Reduce Stress and Anxiety

Much has been written about the calming properties of certain smells. When life feels too overwhelming but you know you have to keep going, light a candle with notes of chamomile, bergamot, lavender or frankincense.

Candles used for aromatherapy can transform an environment through scent, changing the way we feel in the space. Simply watching a lighted candle flicker and sway helps ease and soothe the mind.
